Students at Mulungushi University in Kapiri Mposhi District of Central Province reportedly rioted on Monday night following a power outage caused by a truck that damaged the electricity supply line to the institution.
Kabwe Central Police Station received a report of riotous behaviour involving students at the Main Campus for an incident that occurred on November 24, 2025, between 20:00 and 21:00 hours, according to Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Chilabi said police officers responded promptly and managed to bring the situation under control.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the unrest was triggered by the blackout after a truck damaged the electricity line supplying the university.
The outage reportedly prompted students to riot, resulting in damage to glass panes at the Security Office and the looting of merchandise from marketeers on campus.
ZESCO personnel restored power around 02:00 hours.
“Police officers continued to monitor the situation, which has since returned to normal,” Chilabi stated.
The disturbance comes barely a week after the university awarded President Hakainde Hichilema an honorary doctorate in agroeconomics.
