The Catholic Archdiocese of Lusaka has directed all priests within the metropolitan archdiocese to read a solidarity message issued by the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) in support of Lusaka Archbishop Alick Banda during all Sunday Masses.

The directive follows the summoning of Archbishop Banda by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), a development that has sparked mixed public reactions as the Catholic Church in Zambia rallies behind its leader.

In an urgent communiqué issued on Saturday, Lusaka Archdiocese Vicar General, Father Andrew Simpasa, instructed priests to read the ZCCB statement during announcements at all Masses on Sunday, January 4, 2026, which marks the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.

“This serves to inform the faithful, religious and all parish priests in the Archdiocese of Lusaka that the ZCCB statement of solidarity with Archbishop Banda and the Catholic faithful in Zambia must be read by the presiding priest at all Masses during announcements,” Fr. Simpasa said.

He also invited the faithful to attend a special Mass on Monday at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka at 08:00 hours.

“After which, in compliance with the laws of our Republic, His Grace will dutifully report to the Drug Enforcement Commission,” Fr. Simpasa said.

Archbishop Banda had reportedly been summoned to appear before the DEC for questioning in connection with a motor vehicle allegedly donated to him by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

Meanwhile, DEC Director General Nason Banda has dismissed claims that the summoning of the Archbishop was politically or religiously motivated.

“The summoning of Archbishop Banda should not be viewed through political or religious lenses,” Banda said, adding that the Commission was carrying out its statutory mandate.

Economist, Lubinda Haabazoka, says Zambia’s biggest challenge in 2026 will be converting recent economic gains into tangible benefits for the private sector and the wider population.

Haabazoka noted that while the country had made measurable progress in stabilising the economy, the real test now resided in safeguarding that stability, lowering the cost of capital and ensuring that growth was inclusive and widely felt.

“The 2026 test will be whether Zambia can protect stability, reduce the cost of capital and turn momentum into broad-based private sector expansion — so growth becomes not just measurable, but widely felt,” Haabazoka said in a statement on Friday.

He noted that by the end of 2025, Zambia had achieved several key milestones signalling a clear path to economic recovery.

These included improved external credibility, reflected in positive movements in credit ratings and continued progress under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, as well as stronger food security following a rebound in maize production.

Haabazoka also highlighted growing momentum in the mining sector as a critical pillar of the country’s economic outlook.

“Large-scale investments in mining have helped restore investor confidence and underscore Zambia’s long-term potential, particularly in capital-intensive industries,” he said.

Beyond macroeconomic indicators, Haabazoka observed that government efforts to channel recovery towards grassroots development marked a notable policy shift.

He said measures such as increased utilisation of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and targeted public sector recruitment were deliberate attempts to translate macroeconomic stabilisation into jobs, improve services and economic opportunities at community level.

However, Haabazoka cautioned that sustaining progress would require consistent policy implementation and a business environment that enabled private enterprises to grow and create employment.

“The foundations are being laid, but the next phase must ensure that growth reaches households and enterprises across the country,” he said.

Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) Director General, Nason Banda, has dismissed claims that the summoning of Lusaka Catholic Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda is politically or religiously motivated, saying the matter should not be viewed through political or religious lenses.

Banda said the decision to summon the Archbishop was part of routine investigative procedures and had nothing to do with intimidation or persecution.

According to a call-out circulating on social media platforms, which Banda confirmed, Archbishop Banda has been summoned to appear at DEC offices in Lusaka for questioning in connection with motor vehicles belonging to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) that were seized during investigations into illegally disposed government assets and later found in his possession.

Speaking during a New Year briefing in Lusaka on Thursday, Banda said calling individuals for interviews was standard procedure and did not automatically lead to prosecution.

“This has nothing to do with politics or religion. I am an active Catholic myself. Calling the Archbishop of Lusaka for interviews is normal procedure, and it is not always that whoever is called by DEC for clarification will end up in court,” Banda said in response to journalists’ questions.

He added that such call-outs were not meant to be public and expressed hope that the Archbishop would present himself without unnecessary escorts.

Banda also used the briefing to outline the Commission’s 2025 operational performance, revealing record achievements in drug supply reduction.

He said DEC interventions during the period under review focused on intelligence gathering and investigations into illicit drug cultivation, production, trafficking, possession and abuse.

Banda disclosed that between January 1 and November 30, 2025, the Commission received a total of 4,638 reports linked to suspected drug-related offences, out of which 4,456 investigations were commenced.

This represented a 4.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, when 4,421 reports were received and 3,893 investigations were initiated.

He attributed the rise in reports to enhanced collaboration with local and international law enforcement agencies, as well as improved cooperation from the general public.

In terms of drug seizures, Banda said the Commission recorded an all-time annual record high of over 1,800 tonnes of illegal and controlled drugs seized countrywide in 2025.

He said the seizures included 13,156.87 kilograms of cannabis, 1,870,937.20 kilograms of cannabis plants, 997.86 kilograms of cannabis seeds, 474.8 kilograms of miraa, 2.97 kilograms of Benylin with codeine, and 648.6 grams of cocaine.

Banda said the seizures represented an aggregated increase of over 4,000 percent compared to 2024, when the Commission seized just over 42,000 kilograms of various drugs.

He noted that the 2025 seizures were the highest recorded since the Commission’s establishment in 1989, with the largest discovery involving more than 1,500 tonnes of cannabis plants uncovered in the Chifwema area of Kafue District in Lusaka Province.

On arrests, Banda said joint operations involving other law enforcement agencies and members of the public resulted in the arrest of 4,750 people for various drug-related offences during the review period.

This reflected a 0.5 percent decrease compared to 4,728 arrests recorded in 2024.

Out of the 4,750 people arrested, 911 were convicted, 21 were acquitted, and 29 were discharged under various conditions, while 3,789 cases were still before the courts at different stages by the end of the review period.

Banda further disclosed that 125 drug cartels involved in local and international trafficking activities were identified, of which 102 were dismantled, representing an 81.6 percent success rate.

Through the Anti–Money Laundering Investigations Unit (AMLIU), Banda said the Commission continued contributing to national development through the recovery of stolen public assets.

He said assets valued at over K24 million and US$2 million were placed under seizure, with most cases still undergoing investigative and judicial processes, while the majority were already before the courts.

The Commission also seized 56 motor vehicles, of which eight were forfeited to the State, while 48 remained subject to ongoing investigations and court proceedings.

In addition, Banda said the DEC successfully secured the forfeiture of two helicopters, which have since been handed over to the Zambia Air Force to support its operations.

In the real estate sector, a total of 107 properties, comprising 83 houses and 24 pieces of land, were seized. Out of these, three properties were forfeited to the State, while the remainder were still undergoing investigative and judicial processes at the close of the review period.

President of the Local Catholic Clergy in Zambia, Rev. Fr. Augustine Mwewa, has called on Catholics to respond with prayer, unity and courage following the summoning of Lusaka Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).

The DEC had written to Archbishop Banda, inviting him to appear before its Anti-Money Laundering Investigations Unit on January 5, 2026.

Reacting to the development, Fr. Mwewa urged Catholic clergy, religious and the lay faithful not to be intimidated by what he described as a controversial move.

“This persecution was there and it will continue. We expect more. It has been shown that the current Government has started a war against the Catholic Church, but we pray for Archbishop Banda, all the Bishops, priests and the lay faithful,” said Fr. Mwewa of Holy Family Parish in Lulamba, Chingola.

According to an official Radio Icengelo Facebook post dated January 1, 2026, Fr. Mwewa accused the government of intolerance towards divergent views, arguing that criticism was being met with intimidation.

“The Government doesn’t want divergent views because it has not performed as promised. Out of ten, I can give them one or two, but they are claiming that they have performed,” he said.

He cited unfulfilled campaign promises, including the cost of mealie meal, fertiliser prices, fuel costs and power supply, as well as delayed payments to farmers.

“They promised us mealie meal at K50, cheap fertiliser, fuel, no load shedding. Where is FRA to pay farmers? Go to cooperatives and you will find that half of these farmers have not been paid,” Fr. Mwewa said.

The Catholic cleric warned that pressure on the Church was likely to intensify, urging believers to remain spiritually grounded and united.

“The worst is coming. These guys are coming after the Church and they are trying to isolate Bishops, priests and certain leaders,” he said.

He encouraged Catholics to actively participate in national affairs while remaining peaceful and prayerful.

“As Catholics, we need prayers for this country. We need to be on our knees for the nation. As Catholics, we are free to speak out. We also need to take care of our voters’ cards. We can only fight these people with prayer and unity,” Fr. Mwewa said.

He further cautioned that laws, including cyber legislation, could be used to silence dissenting voices but urged believers not to retreat.

“They may use cyber law against you, but speak out against all evils,” he added.

Fr. Mwewa also called on Church leaders across denominations to remain faithful to their prophetic mission and resist political compromise.

“I invite all Church leaders, not only Catholics, do not be bribed. Do not sell your prophetic voice. We have seen some of our pastors and former pastors eating at the feet of the Government while denouncing the Church and praising wrong things,” he said.

He accused the government of employing tactics aimed at silencing critics.

“We will not allow anyone to intimidate us. It is a pity the Government has chosen to declare war against the Catholic Church. The Government has been saying it will be using different mingalato (tactics). This is the mingalato we are seeing,” Fr. Mwewa said.

“They want to suppress any voice that denounces the wrongs or evils they have done and the promises they have failed to fulfil,” he added.

Enzo Maresca is safe for now but is at risk of losing his job as Chelsea head coach if he does not fix their form, following a run of one win in seven in the Premier League.

In front of the watching hierarchy at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, the Blues were held to a 2-2 draw by Bournemouth, with Maresca booed by the fans for substituting Cole Palmer after 63 minutes. Some also sang: ‘You don’t know what you’re doing.’

Daily UK reports that Maresca’s superiors, including co-owner Behdad Eghbali, walked down the tunnel as usual after full-time. Maresca then withdrew from conducting media interviews after telling aides that he felt too unwell to speak.

According to reports on New Year’s Eve night, Maresca could even resign. Maresca’s representatives did not respond to requests for comment.

While Chelsea hope they can wait until this summer’s planned review – which was always scheduled to happen after two years of having the Italian in charge to gauge progress – it is understood they would be prepared to act sooner if necessary.

It is also possible Maresca could decide to leave by mutual consent if he felt he could no longer continue with Chelsea.

It is felt the team should be doing better than what they have been, with it believed they have enough talent in their squad to secure their target of a top-four finish, but the home draw with Bournemouth was yet another disappointing outcome.

Chelsea led in that game, but have now dropped 15 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season – the most of any side.

Their struggling run has seen them go from being in the title conversation to now sitting fifth, and closer to Nottingham Forest in 17th than Arsenal in first.

January will be a hectic month for Chelsea with nine games pencilled in, starting this Sunday with a trip to Manchester City.

Maresca has been linked with a move to City should Pep Guardiola leave this summer, and that news came after he blindsided his bosses with his ‘worst 48 hours’ outburst previously, plus his refusal to explain the meaning behind them.

Chelsea backed Maresca last winter when his side suffered a similar frustrating dip in form.

But his cryptic comments in press conferences have added to the confusion behind the scenes this time around.

Former State House Permanent Secretary, Emmanuel Chilubanama, has been dragged to court by a Lusaka businessman after a luxury government vehicle he allegedly sold for US$50,000 was seized by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).

The plaintiff, Peter Majula, a businessman of Rhodes Park in Lusaka, claims he legally purchased a brown Toyota Land Cruiser VXL from Chilubanama through a written letter of sale dated May 23, 2017, during the Patriotic Front (PF) administration.

According to the statement of claim filed in the Lusaka High Court, Majula paid for the vehicle in instalments, beginning with US$15,000 in cash, followed by a bank transfer of the balance.

Majula stated that at the time of the transaction, Chilubanama was already using the vehicle for personal purposes and assured him that all procedures to transfer ownership from the Government of the Republic of Zambia would be completed.

However, Majula contended that the assurances later turned out to be false.

Court documents reveal that in July 2023, the DEC seized the vehicle on grounds that Chilubanama had allegedly failed to complete payments to the government for the motor vehicle at the time he exited office as Permanent Secretary.

“The defendant represented to the plaintiff that he would complete all procedures to change ownership of the motor vehicle from the Government into the plaintiff’s name,” reads part of the statement of claim.

Majula argued that Chilubanama has not disputed selling the vehicle or its subsequent seizure by the DEC, which he attributes to the defendant’s failure to finalise exit procedures with the government.

Despite repeated follow-ups and a formal demand letter issued by Messrs Nsama and Company on June 10, 2025, Majula claims Chilubanama has failed to refund the purchase price.

Majula is now seeking an order compelling Chilubanama to refund US$50,000, damages for misrepresentation, interest, and costs of the action.

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has appealed to residents with available land to partner with the Council in managing cemeteries or to sell the land, in a bid to address the city’s shortage of burial sites.

Lusaka reportedly recorded a total of 17,717 deaths from January to December 2025. In a statement issued on Monday, LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba said the initiative aims to increase burial site availability and ensure dignified and sanitary burials.

Out of the total deaths recorded, 3,498 bodies were buried in Council-owned cemeteries, while the remaining were interred in other cemeteries across the city.

“By working together with residents and private cemetery operators, the Council can ensure the city’s burial needs are met sustainably,” Mwamba said.

She added that the Council’s efforts to regulate burial practices and expand burial sites are expected to positively impact public health and safety, easing pressure on existing cemeteries and allowing for dignified burials.

All burials were conducted in accordance with the law, specifically the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019 and the Public Health Act Cap 295, Mwamba noted.

The Council emphasized the importance of obtaining burial permits and using gazetted cemeteries to ensure proper handling and documentation of bodies.

“The Council urges residents to adhere to these regulations to avoid health risks associated with improper burial practices,” Mwamba said.

As part of its Christmas season community outreach, Yango Zambia, part of the global tech company Yango Group, has donated essential household and personal care supplies to Fountain of Hope Orphanage in Lusaka, spreading festive cheer while supporting the wellbeing of less privileged children during the holiday period.

The donation included personal care items, exercise books, cooking oil, mealie meal, rice, sugar, mattresses, and blankets, items selected to help the orphanage meet both immediate needs and provide comfort during the Christmas season.

The visit went beyond the delivery of supplies, with the Yango team spending the day celebrating Christmas with the children through games, shared activities, and a communal lunch.

Laughter, music, and interaction formed the heart of the celebration, reinforcing the importance of togetherness, care, and joy that defines the festive season.

Speaking during the Christmas visit, Kabanda Chewe, Country Head for Yango Zambia, said the initiative reflects Yango’s belief that Christmas is a time to give back in meaningful ways: “Christmas reminds us of the power of kindness, presence, and shared moments. While the donation supports practical needs, spending time with the children, sharing meals, and celebrating together is just as important. At Yango, we believe that real impact comes from showing up, especially during moments that matter most.”

Fountain of Hope representative, John Chabinga described the visit as a meaningful Christmas gesture that brought both support and joy to the home: “This celebration meant a great deal to our children. The donations will help us greatly, but the time spent playing, eating, and celebrating with the children made them feel loved and remembered during the festive season. We are grateful to Yango for choosing to share Christmas with us.”

The Christmas outreach builds on Yango’s wider commitment to social impact in Zambia, where the company has supported initiatives in STEM with the fellowship program, youth events such as the NKATA Africa Football tournament, driver safety and empowerment, and targeted assistance for vulnerable communities.

By marking the festive season through direct engagement and giving, Yango continues to align its growth with purpose, ensuring that as it connects people through technology, it also creates moments of care, warmth, and shared humanity within the communities it serves.

Taifa Group is moving to deepen its regional platform with a planned investment of more than US $500 million in Zambia over the next two years, targeting gas distribution, power generation and contract mining.

For the East African businesses that have long argued for scale, value addition and intra-Africa capital, the announcement that heralds Taifa Group’s entry into Southern African country is notable for its clarity on scope, timelines and delivery.

The effort is being driven by Chairman Rostam Aziz, whose leadership is increasingly defined by execution at industrial scale and by an insistence that regional growth must be built on practical infrastructure that improves lives and productivity.

Unlocking Zambia’s Potential through Essential Infrastructure

Zambia’s economic prospects are closely tied to renewed momentum in copper, alongside agriculture and manufacturing.

Taifa Group is positioning itself to support that resurgence through the essentials that keep industry running, while strengthening the long term growth path of the Group across multiple markets.

“Zambia has become a major focus country for Taifa Group due to industrial ties, proximity and opportunities that are arising. We have some areas of focus but for now, we mainly concentrate on gas – both for home and industrial use,” Aziz said.

Strengthening Power Supply and Industrial Capacity

The immediate commercial logic is demand for reliable, cleaner energy inputs across households and industry.
The broader regional logic is that energy access remains one of the most important constraints on productivity across East Africa and neighbouring markets.
Taifa Group is placing capital where the constraint is most visible, and where improvement can translate into measurable economic gains.
“We also have pipeline projects which include 500 megawatts power generation by solar PV because we believe we have a role to play in alleviating the current acute power problem. We are also focused on bringing our mining expertise that we have accumulated for over 30 years, mainly in contract mining and supply of key mining equipment and inputs. So, altogether, we are looking to invest US $500 million in Zambia over the next 24 months,” he said.

Widening access to cleaner energy beyond Lusaka

In energy, credibility is earned through availability. Taifa Gas is expected to begin shipping LPG to Zambia in June next year, alongside investments in distribution networks designed to keep supply consistent and accessible.

This is where Aziz’s approach matters for both Zambia and East Africa – success is built in depots, logistics and service coverage, not simply in headline numbers.
“Just like our operations in Tanzania and Kenya, we are going to build depots in every town we’ll go to in Zambia and we are not just concentrating in Lusaka, but we go shall to every town,” he said.

Protecting Health, Strengthening Homes, and Reducing Harmful Fuels

Aziz is also using the Zambia programme to reinforce a wider point that resonates in East African boardrooms; stronger intra-Africa investment is not a slogan, it is a strategy for resilience, shared growth and reduced exposure to external disruptions.

“We should not wait until people come from outside and invest in our countries. Zambians should start investing in Tanzania; and equally Tanzanians must start investing in Zambia,” he said.

Just as importantly, the programme is presented as a response to social and economic realities that shape long run prosperity, including household health, cleaner cooking fuels, and the reduction of diesel dependence in industrial operations.

These are challenges that Zambia and East Africa share, and they are central to building a more competitive and sustainable regional economy.
“Zambia has the commodity (copper) the whole world wants which is going to boom the economy. And so, we need to put in infrastructure to make life easy for our people in Zambia so that they benefit from this boom, and that is why we want to bring in gas for home and industrial use so that we reduce on exposing our women to the fumes from charcoal burning that is intoxicating them. We also need to reduce a lot of these diesel power generators in key industries, especially the mines to reduce carbon emissions for the sake of our environment. We need to preserve human life as well as the environment.”

Building Regional prosperity through African-led investment

For Taifa Group, the Zambia expansion strengthens the Group’s future by extending its energy and industrial services platform into a market with clear demand drivers.

Aziz is firmly committed to a large-scale deployment of capital into infrastructure across Zambia and the broader East African region. This investment is strategically aimed at supporting growth, creating jobs, and improving living standards.

“People are now more aware of what Zambia is all about. Today, you have two million foreigners coming here annually when four years ago, you only had 500, 000,” said Aziz.
Aziz argues that Zambia’s improving visibility and growing investor attention reinforce the case for strong confidence in the region’s next, promising phase of growth.
